Authorities are investigating a robbery at a Leavenworth shoe store, a police spokesman said.

The incident was reported at 5:20 p.m. Sunday at Payless Shoesource, 4824 S. Fourth St.

A man reportedly entered the store and approached a clerk. The suspect poked what he said was a weapon into the employee’s back.

“The clerk believed the suspect had a weapon,” said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

The suspect reportedly demanded money from the cash register.

Another employee saw the commotion.

“The suspect grabbed a pair of shoes and ran out,” Nicodemus said.

No money was turned over to the suspect.

The suspect was described as a tall white man who has gray hair. He has a large tattoo on the back of his left calf. He wore a blue windbreaker jacket, blue shorts, tennis shoes and a gray or blue hat.

The suspect was last seen heading north from the shoe store on foot.
