Authorities are investigating several cases in which people have tried to use fake money to make purchases at local businesses.

Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said about half a dozen cases recently have been reported. In several of the cases, employees at businesses accepted the bills only to learn later that they are not legal currency.

Nicodemus said the bills used in the crimes are made to look like real currency, but they contain wording to indicate they are fake.

“It’s a movie prop essentially,” he said.

He said this type of fake currency is probably not hard to purchase over the internet.

The fake bills that have turned up at local businesses have phrases such as “for motion picture purposes only” printed on them.

“Retailers have to be attentive,” Nicodemus said.
