A Leavenworth man reported that he was scammed out of $3,5000 when he recently attempted to purchase a boat that was advertised on the internet, a police spokesman said.

The crime was reported Saturday to the Leavenworth Police Department.

The man reported that he had attempted to purchase a boat that had been posted for sale on the online service Craigslist.

The man apparently paid using Amazon gift cards, but he never received the boat.

Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said people should be cautious when they are asked to purchase something using gift cards.

"It's a big red flag," he said.

Nicodemus said providing a number that is on a gift card is "no different that having your credit card number."
