As Halloween fast approaches, an annual tradition will take place next weekend in downtown Leavenworth.
The 30th annual Halloween Costume Parade/Contest and Great Pumpkin Giveaway is slated Oct. 28.
The event is hosted each year by Coldwell Banker Reilly & Sons/Reilly Insurance.
“It’s a tradition,” said Cynthia Sowle, director of the annual downtown event. “Families look forward to it every year.”
The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Haymarket Square, Cherokee and Seventh streets. Those interested in participating should begin lining up at 9:45 a.m.
Participants will take the short walk to Reilly Plaza, Sixth and Delaware streets.
The costume contest begins at 10 a.m. at Reilly Plaza. Gift cards will be awarded to the top costumes.
Free pumpkins will be given to children, as well as free candy. There also will be games and face painting.
Karen Laurence, sales manager at Reilly Insurance, said the event attracts more than 1,000 people to downtown each year. She said 500 goody bags filled with treats were passed out to the children last year. Considering the number of children and their families, Laurence estimated that 1,500 people attended the event last year.
The event will be held rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the event will take place under the parking canopy next to Reilly Plaza.
Sowle said “a good majority” of the insurance company’s employees and real estate agents help out with the event each year.
The event is one of several Halloween-related events happening in Leavenworth next week.
