The Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a forum to provide information about funding for public schools.

The Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a forum to provide information about funding for public schools.

The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade. It is free and open to the public.

Chamber President Brandon Johannes said the purpose of the event is not to debate what is adequate funding for public schools, a question that is being argued in an ongoing Kansas Supreme Court Case.

Johannes said the purpose of the forum is to focus on the mechanics of school funding.

“We are going to give folks the nuts and bolts,” he said.

The forum will feature Deputy Commissioner Dale Dennis from the Kansas State Department of Education as well as representatives of the Leavenworth, Lansing, Easton and Fort Leavenworth school districts.

Johannes said the chamber’s Government Affairs Committee is trying to put together a State of the Community program, possibly in February. Ahead of that event, the chamber is hosting breakout sessions to provide information about specific topics.

Thursday’s forum is one of the breakout sessions. The chamber has previously hosted forums that focused on income and property taxes.
