A rural Leavenworth County woman was taken to the hospital after she was struck by a vehicle while checking her mailbox, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

A rural Leavenworth County woman was taken to the hospital after she was struck by a vehicle while checking her mailbox, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

The incident was reported around 5:18 p.m. Wednesday on 158th Street near Kansas 32 Highway.

A 30-year-old woman was getting her mail when she stepped onto the roadway. She was struck by a northbound 2016 Toyota Scion, according to Undersheriff Jim Sherley.

The car was driven by a 27-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, man.

The speed limit in that area is 50 mph.

The woman suffered broken bones and other injuries. She was transported to the hospital by Leavenworth County EMS.

Sherley said the accident is still under investigation.
