A dedication ceremony will be held Sunday as a local, century-old church celebrates the completion of a new addition.

Construction has been completed of the Henry Last Memorial Wing at the Church of the Open Door, 4800 S. 20th St. The dedication ceremony will begin at noon.

Completion of the building, which measures nearly 9,000 square feet, is the “fulfillment of a 30-year vision,” said Andy Huber, associate pastor at the church.

The construction included the addition of a breezeway, gymnasium, playground and five classrooms.

Huber said the new one-story building will provide the congregation with more space for its programs, Bible instruction and fellowship.

“We have been planning and saving for this for a good number of years,” Huber said.

Henry Last was one of the five founding members of the Church of the Open Door in July 1916. He served as the pastor of the church from 1920-1952.

The church is one of the oldest in Leavenworth. It turned 101 years old this year.

“Our main purpose is to honor and glorify Jesus Christ,” Huber said. “It is our prayer that the building will be used for that purpose for years to come.”
