After several days of warmer weather, colder temperatures were expected to return today along with a chance of snow and ice.

A winter weather advisory is scheduled to be in effect from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today for Leavenworth County and surrounding counties, according to the National Weather Service.

It was anticipated that light freezing rain and a wintry mix could result in slippery conditions.

According to a forecast for Leavenworth, the temperature will drop during the day. The temperature may drop to around 19 degrees by 5 p.m.

Wet surfaces from morning rainfall and freezing rain will freeze as temperatures fall, causing slick and hazardous conditions, according to the NWS.

“Everybody needs to exercise caution,” said Kim Buchanan, deputy director for Leavenworth County Emergency Management.

She said windy conditions also will be a concern today.

According to the National Weather Service, wind speeds may increase during the morning from 9-14 mph to 17-22 mph. Wind gusts could be as high as 32 mph.

There will be a slight chance of snow showers this evening. The low tonight will be around 10 degrees with wind chill values ranging between minus-2 and 3 degrees. Wind speeds during the nighttime hours will decrease from 15-20 mph to 9-14 mph. Wind gusts during the night could reach as high as 30 mph.

The high temperature Friday will be near 26 degrees with wind chill values between minus-2 and 8 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

There is a slight chance of snow showers Friday night. The low Friday night should be around 11 degrees.

The high Saturday will be near 17 degrees. The high Sunday will be near 27 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
