The Leavenworth Police Department soon will have two new detectives who will be devoted to the investigation of drug crimes.

Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens said the new detectives should be on board by the middle of February following promotions earlier that month.

Establishing these detective positions addresses a goal set last year by members of the Leavenworth City Commission.

Included in the City Commission's 2017-2018 goals are police engagement in targeted initiatives to reduce drug crimes in high risk areas and consideration of staffing changes to focus on drug cases and cybercrime.

The city's 2018 operating budget includes $234,000 in additional funding for the Leavenworth Police Department.

Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said the new narcotics detectives will be supervised by a sergeant who oversees other detectives in the department.

Kitchens said the Police Department is not yet ready to launch a detective position for cybercrime. He said this likely will happen in the summer, but it will depend on staffing.
