Thirty-five students will be competing Friday in the annual Leavenworth County Spelling Bee.

The bee will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge No. 55, 300 S. 20th St.

The event is open to the public.

The Leavenworth County Spelling Bee is organized by the Leavenworth Area Retired School Personnel Association. This is the 58th year LARSPA has sponsored the event, according to Priscilla LoPresti, an organizer of the bee.

“It just ties in with education,” said LoPresti, commenting on why LARSPA continues to sponsor the event.

Students in grades five through eight from 18 schools will be participating in the spelling bee.

Two students will advance from Leavenworth County to a regional spelling bee that will take place March 3 in Hays.

Participants in the regional bee will have the chance to advance to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The winner of last year's Leavenworth County Spelling Bee was Aaron Brown, who was attending Lansing Middle School.
