Classes were canceled and other offices were closed Tuesday because of an ice storm that struck the area.

Leavenworth County and some of the surrounding counties were under an ice storm warning as freezing rain and sleet fell in the area.

“Anything that does come down is freezing,” said Chuck Magaha, director of Leavenworth County Emergency Management.

He said some power outages were reported Tuesday in the county.

Magaha urged people to stay home Tuesday.

“If you don't need to get out, don't get out,” he said.

Crews were out Tuesday treating and plowing county roads, said David Lutgen, public works director for the county.

Crews were also treating streets in the city of Leavenworth and plowing slush from emergency snow routes, according to Mike McDonald, public works director for the city of Leavenworth.

He said city crews were treating residential streets with salt. But plowing efforts were being focused more on streets with heavier traffic. He said plowing a street that does not have a lot of traffic can create slick areas.

While roads were slushy Tuesday, McDonald and Lutgen believed the slush eventually would freeze.

Most county offices were closed Tuesday because of the weather.

Initially, county officials announced the Leavenworth County Courthouse would be opening after a two-hour delay. But the decision later was made not to open the offices, according to announcements on the county government's website.

A County Commission meeting that had been scheduled for Tuesday morning also was canceled. It will be rescheduled for later in the week.

Offices for the city of Leavenworth were open Tuesday, and city commissioners planned to have an evening study session as scheduled, City Manager Paul Kramer said.

All public schools in the county were closed Tuesday. Classes also were canceled for Xavier Catholic School and Saint Paul Lutheran School as well as the University of Saint Mary.

In the Leavenworth public school system, Tuesday had been scheduled as a professional development day for teachers. But all professional development activities were canceled, according to the school district's Facebook page.

Looking ahead, there is a chance for snow and sleet, possibly mixed with freezing rain, Wednesday tonight in Leavenworth. This could be followed by freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet, according to a forecast from the National Weather Service.
