A grass fire north of Basehor burned across about 25 acres, a fire department official said.

The fire was reported at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday on 163rd Street.

At one point, flames were approaching a barn, but the structure was not damaged.

"They were able to get it stopped," said Chuck Magaha, chief of Fairmount Township Fire Department.

He said the fire was started by a woman who was burning a small brush pile.

"It immediately got away from her," Magaha said.

In addition to the Fairmount Township Fire Department, firefighters from the city of Tonganoxie, Stranger Township and Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1 responded to the grass fire.

Magaha said some of the fire trucks became stuck in mud as firefighters responded to the fire.
