The Basehor Police Department could have a new home in the near future.

Basehor City Administrator Lloyd Martley Jr. said nothing is certain yet, but the city government has signed a tentative agreement to purchase property at 146th Street and Parallel Road for $530,000. A resolution to move forward with the acquisition was approved during a March 21 City Council meeting.

Martley, who also serves as the city's police chief, said the property could be used to house the Basehor Police Department. He said other city staff also could be moved there on temporary basis.

But he said city officials are not yet “100 percent certain” what the property will be used for, and the project is still in its preliminary stages.

“We don't even technically own it yet,” he said of the property.

Currently, the Basehor Police Department has its headquarters at Basehor City Hall. Several other city employees also work at City Hall.

“We've kind of outgrown the facility we're in, both the Police Department and city staff,” Martley said.

He said the City Hall building also has structural issues involving drainage.

Martley said the building being purchased is larger. He said the building, located at 14610 Parallel Road, has 5,200 square feet. The building is only six years old. The city also is acquiring one acre of land to the west of the building.

Martley said purchasing the building and renovating it to suit the city's needs will be much cheaper than constructing a new police station.

The city owns 55 acres of land in the area of 158th Street and Parallel Road. City officials have plans to eventually use this land for a city campus.

Martley said a new city hall could someday be located at this city campus. But he said a police station likely will not be placed at the city campus.

“But we're kind of in immediate need with regards to the Police Department and City Hall right now because we've just outgrown the (current) facility,” he said.
