A man remained in the hospital Wednesday after being shot several times in Leavenworth, a police spokesman said.

The incident was reported at 12:33 a.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of Sixth Avenue.

Officers were dispatched to the area for reports of shots fired.

“We received several phone calls,” said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

When they arrived, officers found a vehicle that had struck a utility pole.

Inside the vehicle was a 41-year-old man who had suffered several gunshot wounds, Nicodemus said.

The man was transported to a Kansas City area hospital.

Nicodemus said the man's injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

Police officers found another wrecked vehicle in the area of the shooting. No one was in the vehicle.

Based on information from witnesses, police believe this second vehicle was used by a suspect in the shooting. Nicodemus said investigators are working to identify the suspect.
