A man who was stopped for speeding ended up being arrested for alleged drug crimes, according to a police spokesman.

The traffic stop occurred at 5:52 p.m. Wednesday in the 2100 block of South Fourth Street.

Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said police officers had probable cause to believe there were drugs in the vehicle.

Police searched the vehicle and found 28 grams of suspected marijuana, Xanax pills and an unidentified substance officers suspect is a narcotic. Nicodemus said the substance will be tested.

"The driver showed signs of impairment," Nicodemus said.

The driver is a 23-year-old rural Leavenworth man. He was arrested for allegations of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and transporting an open container of alcohol.
