Motivational speaker Retro Bill will be making his annual visit to Leavenworth County next week. And his visit will be capped off with a classic car show and retro dance.

The family-friendly car show and dance will take place May 5 at Pleasant Ridge Middle School, 3205 Easton Road.

The car show will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. The dance is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. The events are free and open to the public.

Free hot dogs and root beer floats will be served.

The events are being sponsored by the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office and Leavenworth County-Cities Drug and Alcohol Abuse Council.

"It should be a lot of fun," said Deputy Connie Anderson, a Drug Abuse and Resistance Education officer with the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office arranges for Retro Bill, whose real name is Bill Russ, to speak at local schools each year. Retro Bill speaks to students about topics such as drug and alcohol abuse, making good decisions and bullying.

Retro Bill will be speaking at Tonganoxie and Linwood elementary schools and Richard Warren Middle School on May 3. He will be back at Warren Middle School on May 4 before visiting Xavier Catholic School and Pleasant Ridge Elementary School.

The Sheriff's Office has organized other special events with Retro Bill in the past. But this year marks the first time a car show has been incorporated with one of his visits.

Anderson said members of the Leavenworth Cruisers organization have been invited to participate in the car show. Anderson said others who have classic cars are welcome to participate.

"People can vote on the coolest car," Anderson said.

The winner will be announced during the dance.

Those attending the dance are encouraged to dress in retro clothing. There will be contests for the best dressed, coolest hair and best dancer.

Anderson said there also will be hula hoop and limbo contests.
