When they met Wednesday, members of the Leavenworth Board of Education took final action to not renew the teaching contract of longtime high school basketball coach Larry Hogan.

Board members approved a resolution to not renew Hogan's contract for the 2018-2019 school year. The board also approved a resolution to not renew the contract of Alaina Hildman, a special education eduction teacher at Richard Warren Middle School.

Hogan coached with the school district for 35 years. He also has been teaching physical education at Leavenworth High School.

During a meeting last month, board members voted to terminate Hogan from the position of head boys basketball coach at Leavenworth High School. Board members also voted at that time to formally notify Hogan of their intent not to renew his teaching contract.

Board members have not commented about the reasons for Hogan's termination from his coaching position and the non-renewal his teaching contract.

School board attorney Robert Hingula said in April that board members are prohibited from sharing information about personnel matters to the public.

Several supporters of Hogan addressed board members during last month's meeting. No one from the public addressed the board Wednesday.

The final resolution to not approve Hogan's contract was approved Wednesday by a 4-1 vote. Board member Nancy Klemp voted against it. Board members Jose Morales and Loyal Torkelson were absent.

"I was not in favor of the way it was handled," said Klemp, speaking after the meeting.

The resolution not to renew Hildman's contract was approved 5-0.

The resolutions were approved after board members met behind closed doors in executive session for 13 minutes to discuss personnel.

Also Wednesday, board members approved Hogan's replacement as the head boys basketball coach at Leavenworth High School.

They approved the appointment of Prentes Potts to the coaching position.

Board members also officially approved the appointment of Potts to an in-school suspension teaching position at the high school.

The appointments became official when board members approved a staffing report that listed various personnel changes.

The staffing report also was approved after board members returned from executive session. The vote was 5-0.
