A lot of people may be taking to the highways during the upcoming holiday weekend.

AAA is estimating about 36.6 million Americans are planning road trips this Memorial Day weekend, according to the Kansas branch of the automobile association.

As people head out on the road, Leavenworth Deputy Police Chief Dan Nicodemus recommends that drivers build additional time into their travel schedules to ensure they are not rushed.

“Always buckle up,” Nicodemus said.

Leavenworth County Sheriff Andy Dedeke urges people not to drink and drive during the holiday weekend.

He also urges motorists to be mindful of motorcyclists. He said more motorcycles may be on the roadways this weekend because of nice weather.

“Be extra careful, especially at intersections,” he said.

Motorists likely will be facing higher prices at the gas pump this weekend. The national average gas price May 21 was $2.93 per gallon. This is 57 cents more than the average national price from a year ago, according to AAA Kansas.

This Memorial Day weekend's gas prices are expected to be the highest since 2014.
