A counterfeit bill recently turned up at a Leavenworth business, a police spokesman said.

The fake $50 bill was reported to police Monday at Casey’s General Store, 2100 S. Fourth St.

A report from the Leavenworth Police Department indicates the bill was passed at the business two days earlier.

“It wasn't noticed immediately,” said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

The bill is believed to have been used to purchase a lottery ticket, and $40 in change was provided to the person who used the bill.

Nicodemus said the case will be turned over to the U.S. Secret Service, which investigates counterfeit money cases.

The deputy police chief said he does not know of any other recent reports of counterfeit bills in Leavenworth.
