The organizer of a free weekend concert in downtown Leavenworth said the event was a success.

“We had a great crowd, it was great music, great food,” said Wendy Scheidt, executive director of Leavenworth Main Street, the sponsor of the monthly summer concert series.

The band Dating Sarah, a cover band that plays music from the 1960s and 1970s, was the featured band Saturday night at the Free Outdoor Concert Series at Haymarket Square.

Scheidt said approximately 300 people attended the event.

“The band really got the audience involved,” she said. “There were several couples dancing.”

At one point in the three-hour show, the band invited children onto the stage to play tambourines during a song.

Scheidt said there were some new faces in the crowd Saturday night. She said several military families who have just arrived in Leavenworth to attend the Command and General Staff College on Fort Leavenworth were in attendance.

Ten Penny Restaurant and Bar was the featured vendor at this month’s concert.

The next show will be Aug. 11 at Haymarket Square. Abbey Road, a Beatles tribute band, will be the featured band.

“People like the throwback music,” Scheidt said.

She said volunteers are always needed to help out in the concerts. To volunteer, call 913-682-3924.
