The Tipsy 0.5K is scheduled for Saturday and will be a fundraiser to help re-open Alliance Against Family Violence. In this Q5, board member Sherry Brown talks about the importance of the community getting out to support the AAFV.

Sherry, what is The Tipsy 0.5K and when and where will it begin and end?
The Tipsy 0.5K Stroll will be on Saturday, Aug. 4 and it is an opportunity for the folks in Leavenworth and the surrounding community to become reacquainted with The Alliance Against Family Violence. This friendly, easy stroll is about fellowship and fun.
It will begin at Kansas Country Store at 5 p.m. for refreshments and registration and end at McDevitt and Duffy Deli. Because it is a short few blocks to travel, we hope everyone takes the time to visit with our board members about the Alliance and learn how you can help.

Is the race a combination of a run, a stroll and a vintage car ride? What types of beverages will be offered at the event?
This five-block event can be jogged, walked or for just a bit of fun, you can purchase the opportunity to ride in a vintage car. It will be a great night for a ride. Before you begin your stroll we will offer beer, wine or water. Then we will have a ‘shotgun’ start at 6 p.m. Luigi’s is creating a ‘purple’ cocktail for purchase. When you reach McDevitt and Duffy Deli, 20 percent of their food sales will also be donated.

What will the proceeds for the Tipsy 0.5 K go to help?
All proceeds will benefit The Alliance Against Family Violence. Our doors have been closed since last November. Last year alone AAFV served over 500 people fleeing abuse. This year they have had no place to go and no victim services. We have a new board of directors with a mission to re-open this much-needed facility as soon as possible. The core services of the shelter include: 24-hour crisis hotline, court, medical and police response advocacy, and counseling.  I honestly am not sure our community is full aware of all that this organization does and the urgency to become fully funded and re-open.

What is the cost of the race and where can people register?
The cost of the race is $25, or if you choose a vintage car ride, $50. We will be accepting monetary donations that evening at both locations.
It will take the support of the entire community to achieve this goal before the end of 2018.

Why is it important for people to support this event and help to raise money for the Alliance Against Family Violence?
Alliance Against Family Violence is the first and only local sexual and domestic violence victim advocacy service organization that serves all Leavenworth County communities.
Last year alone there were 1,100 crisis line calls, over 800 clients received services and 150 people were provided safe shelter.
Violence and abuse have no boundaries. We likely have a family member, friend or neighbor who has experienced these issues.
It could be you. With your help we will raise the needed funds to be able to receive our grants (which assist in the daily operations), but grants alone cannot provide for all of the needs of this organization.
This is our community, these are our people, our safety.
