Local dignitaries, representatives of civic organizations and other members of the community took the stage in full rock star regalia to raise money for education Saturday night in Leavenworth.

Approximately 20 “rock stars” displayed their on-stage talents at the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce’s Lip Sync Battle at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 55. The event was a production of the Women’s Division of the chamber.

Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson won a clean sweep of the top awards.

Thompson won the People’s Choice Award, raising $439 in cash donations for his over-the-top performance of “Thank You for Being a Friend,” the theme song from the television show “Golden Girls.” His stage presence included a blazing red suit, black cape and sunglasses. He also won the Judge’s Choice Award.

“It was a great event,” said program organizer Mary Mack. “The performers were awesome. They did a great job for a great cause.”

Mack said approximately $2,500 in cash donations were collected from attendees.

Mack said approximately $5,000 was raised at the event through admission fees and sponsorships.

Proceeds from the event will go to four scholarships for traditional and non-traditional students.

“This is a great, fun way to fund scholarships for high school students and adult students,” Mack said.

Mack said the Women’s Division intends to host another Lip Sync Battle again next summer.
