A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a woman who is facing an assault charge in connection to a July 6 pursuit in which shots allegedly were fired at a member of the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office.

Shauntel M. Cornelius, 28, is not accused of firing the shots. But she reportedly was a passenger in the vehicle that was pursued. And she is alleged to have thrown objects onto the roadway while being pursued by a corporal with the Sheriff’s Office.

Cornelius is charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, interference with law enforcement and criminal littering.

The charges stem from a pursuit that reportedly began in the area of 207th Street and Kansas 92 Highway. Cornelius and Anthony J. Robertson are alleged to have fled on foot after their vehicle came to a stop in a field. They were apprehended the following day.

A preliminary hearing for Cornelius is scheduled for Sept. 21 in Leavenworth County District Court.

Evidence will be presented during the hearing, and the judge will determine if the case against Cornelius should move forward.

District Judge Michael Gibbens set the date for the preliminary hearing Wednesday during a status hearing in the case.

Gibbens also scheduled preliminary hearings in two other cases that are pending against Cornelius. Those hearings also are scheduled for Sept. 21.

In one case, Cornelius faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, interference with law enforcement and three traffic violations. These crimes are alleged to have occurred Feb. 9 in Leavenworth.

In another case, Cornelius faces a charge of interference with law enforcement. This crime is alleged to have occurred Nov. 8 in rural Leavenworth.

Cornelius remains in custody at the Leavenworth County Jail.

Robertson also is charged in connection to the July 6 pursuit. He is charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer and interference with law enforcement. His arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 26.
