One woman was arrested following a pursuit that was initiated after a Lansing police officer heard a gunshot, a police spokesman said.

Two other suspects remain at large.

The incident began around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

A Lansing police officer was driving north on Main Street near Helen Street when he heard what sounded like a gunshot.

The officer then saw a passenger car turn onto Main Street from Helen Street. The car’s headlights were not turned on, according to Lansing Police Chief Steve Wayman.

The officer activated the emergency lights on his patrol vehicle in an attempt to stop the other car.

“The vehicle accelerated to a high rate of speed to get rid of the officer,” Wayman said.

The officer pursued the vehicle, which turned west onto Fairlane Street and then onto Holiday Drive. The vehicle eventually reached DeSoto Road, where it traveled north into Leavenworth.

The Lansing officer continued to pursue the vehicle.

The vehicle traveled into a construction area on New Lawrence Road. The vehicle was abandoned, and two suspects reportedly ran from the car.

The Lansing officer got out of his patrol vehicle to chase after the suspects on foot. But the suspects ran into an area where homes are being constructed.

Wayman said the officer did not feel it was tactically sound to chase after people into a construction area by himself.

“He disengaged the foot pursuit,” Wayman said.

The officer returned to the vehicle that had been abandoned by suspects. About 20 feet outside of the car, the officer found a shotgun.

“A third person was found in the car,” Wayman said.

The Lansing woman who was found in the vehicle was taken into custody for an allegation of aiding and abetting the other suspects.

The other suspects were not located.

During daylight hours Tuesday, police returned to the area where the gunshot was heard. They found a vehicle that appeared to have gunshot damage, Wayman said.

He said the investigation continues.
