Leavenworth authorities are looking into the circumstances of an infant who suffered significant injuries, a police spokesman said.

The boy was taken to a local hospital Wednesday night for what were reported to be accidental injuries. But police believe the injuries are suspicious, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

“We’re investigating it,” Nicodemus said.

The boy later was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri.

Nicodemus said the infant’s injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
