A non-competitive 5K run/walk will be held this weekend to honor military personnel who have died.

The eighth annual Run/Walk for the Fallen is slated for 8-10 a.m. Sept. 15 on Fort Leavenworth.

The event begins and ends at the Frontier Conference Center, 350 Biddle Blvd.

“This event is to remember and commemorate those who have died while serving,” said Zach Stephens, events manager for Fort Leavenworth Morale, Welfare and Recreation, the sponsor of the event.

The event is free and open to the public. All ages and abilities are invited to participate. Strollers are welcome, as well as dogs on leashes.

“This is a very family friendly event,” Stephens said.

Those participating are encouraged to bring photos of their fallen loved ones, as well as flags, guidons and small banners.

Stephens said the event is the largest attended run/walk of the year on the military installation.

He said depending on the weather, there could be as many as 1,000 people participating in the event.

Event T-shirts will be on sale for $12 each on the day of the run/walk.

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. on the day of the event.
