A Leavenworth man is facing battery charges for allegedly abusing an infant.

Robert F. Green, 22, is charged in Leavenworth County District Court with two counts of aggravated battery, according to court records.

The crimes are alleged to have occurred between Aug. 20 and Sept. 5 in Leavenworth.

According to the written complaint, Green is accused of causing the victim great bodily harm or disfigurement.

The Leavenworth Police Department began an investigation after a baby was taken to a local hospital Sept. 5 for what were reported to be accidental injuries. Deputy Police Chief Dan Nicodemus said police thought the injuries were suspicious. The boy later was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri.

Nicodemus described the child’s injuries as significant, but the injuries are not considered life-threatening.

While appearing in court Friday, Green requested a court-appointed attorney. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 19, according to court records.
