Special meeting scheduled

A member of the Leavenworth Board of Education has resigned, the board president said.

Board member Jose Morales resigned last week, according to board President Mike Carney.

“I asked him to resign and he did,” Carney said.

During a meeting Sept. 10, Carney announced he had sent a letter to Morales, asking him to resign.

Carney argued that Morales was not fulfilling his duties as a board member because he frequently misses meetings.

Carney said Morales resigned the day after the Sept. 10 meeting.

Morales was elected to the school board in 2015.

Members of the school board are scheduled to have a special meeting Thursday to discuss the vacancy.

Carney said board members will vote on a couple of resolutions, which he described as being a matter of protocol.

He said the school board will advertise the vacancy and eventually appoint someone to fill the position.

State law requires the school board to publish notification of the vacancy in the newspaper. Board members have to wait at least 15 days after the publication before filling the vacancy.

The Leavenworth Times attempted to contact Morales for comment using an email address posted on the school district’s website. There was no immediate response to the email message.

The special school board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the district’s administrative office, 200 N. Fourth St.
