A Leavenworth man has reported the loss of more than $56,000 as a result of identity theft, a police spokesman said.

The incident was reported Sept. 25. The victim reported the loss was the result of multiple transactions involving bank accounts and several credit cards, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

Nicodemus said it is not known how the victim’s identity was stolen.

Nicodemus recommends that people monitor credit reports and bank transactions to protect themselves from identity theft.

“The sooner we catch it, the better the chance we have of tracking it down,” he said.

He also encourages people to frequently change passwords and use antivirus software on their computers.
