When they met Tuesday, Leavenworth city commissioners gave final approval to rate increases for sewer and trash collection services fees.

Sewer, or wastewater, fees will increase by 5 percent. Fees for refuse services will increase by 8 percent.

The rate increases will go into effect December. Wastewater and refuse fees appear on residents' water bills.

Commissioners were first presented ordinances for increasing the rates last month. The ordinances were brought back to the commission Tuesday for final votes.

Both ordinances passed unanimously.

Wastewater rates are based on water usage. Public Works Director Mike McDonald has said most people in the city pay between $21.29 and $28.46 per month. With a 5 percent increase, monthly fees for these customers are being raised between $1.06 and $1.42 per month.

According to McDonald, the current residential rate for trash collection services will increase from $16.87 per month to $18.22 per month.

City Manager Paul Kramer said the city normally increases the refuse fee by 3 percent each year. But he said a larger increase is needed for the coming year because of a needed truck purchase that was not part of the normal truck replacement schedule.

Mayor Mark Preisinger said be believes $18.22 per month is a fair fee for the trash collection service provided by the city.

Also Tuesday, commissioners took actions related to projects to help reduce flooding problems in neighborhoods.

They approved a bid from Linaweaver Construction, Lansing, in the amount of $135,501 for a water detention project in the area of 16th Terrace and Thornton Street.

Commissioners also approved a change order in the amount of $5,000 to pay for extra design work for the project at 16th Terrace and Thornton Street. The design work was performed by Water Resource Solutions.

The change order increases the total cost of the design contract to $43,665.

Commissioners also approved a change order for a design contract for a culvert replacement project at 14th and Pawnee streets.

Wilson & Co. was hired for the design work for this project. The change order is for $7,500, which will increase the total cost of the design contract to $41,400.
