Michael Powell, Leavenworth, was seeking to unseat incumbent Janet Waugh.

Waugh, a Democrat from Kansas City, Kansas, won the race with 49,977 votes across the 1st District. Powell, a Republican, had 33,316 votes, according to the unofficial results from the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office.

Even though he lost the race, Powell finished first in his home county of Leavenworth County with 15,467 votes. Waugh had 10,086 votes in Leavenworth County.
