Now that voters have approved an expansion of the Leavenworth County Commission, the county clerk has started preliminary work on a process that will result in a special election for two new commissioners.

During this week’s election, voters in Leavenworth County approved a ballot proposition to increase the commission from three members to five.

The question was placed on the ballot after a group calling itself Give Me Five collected the necessary signatures.

The proposition was passed by a vote of 15,662 (62.6 percent) to 9,357 (37.4 percent).

County Clerk Janet Klasinski said she plans to discuss the process for having the special election when county commissioners meet Tuesday. Klasinski said she will discuss possible dates for actions related to the process.

One of the required actions will be the commission’s approval of a resolution concerning the expansion of the commission. The resolution has to be adopted before Dec. 30.

Klasinski said a special election to select two additional commissioners must take place between 75 and 90 days after the resolution is approved.

She said the special election may occur sometime in March.

Leavenworth County currently has three commission districts. But the boundaries will be redrawn for five districts.

Klasinski said the County Commission’s resolution will set the boundaries.

The Republican and Democratic parties will nominate the parties’ candidates for the special election by conventions.

People interested in running in the special election as independent candidates will have 25 days to collect signatures of 5 percent of the voters in a particular district. The clock will start running after the governor makes a declaration following the passage of the County Commission’s resolution.

“It’s just such a tight timeline,” Klasinski said.

The winners of the special election will take office immediately after the election.

The results of this week’s election in Leavenworth County will be certified during Tuesday’s County Commission meeting. Commissioners will review the results while acting as the Board of County Canvassers.
