After raising more $1 million from donors during the “silent phase” of a fundraising campaign, officials with the Leavenworth Regional Catholic Schools are kicking off the public phase.
They’re raising money to renovate and add onto the former Muncie Elementary School, which they plan to open in the fall as the new Xavier Elementary School.
“We have been extremely blessed,” said Barbara H. Ferrara, president of the local Catholic schools.
She said the nearly $1.1 million that’s already been raised “goes to show you that Leavenworth County believes in our youth and the future of Catholic education.”
Ferrara said officials hope to raise $3.7 million through its For the Next 150 Years capital campaign.
“We are well on our way and excited to be able to have the kids in the new Xavier Elementary starting the 2011-12 school year,” she said.
The school will serve students in kindergarten through the eighth grade, consolidating three existing Xavier campuses into the new location.
The campaign seeks to fund extensive renovations and new construction to the school and its surrounding property on Muncie Road. The project includes creating Catholic identity for the former public school, classroom renovations and building a new gymnasium and cafeteria.
Ferrara said there’s already been some interior renovation work that has involved “replacing ceiling tiles, lights and painting, which has saved us nearly $300,000.”
“This is going to be a very nice upgrade for our students and families,” she said. “We still need a lot of financial assistance to make this entire project a reality but we are optimistic that the community will continue to support us.”
Leavenworth Regional Catholic Schools will host parish kickoffs this weekend for Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph, Holy Angels, St. Francis DeSales and St. Joseph-St. Lawrence churches. The parish kickoff for Sacred Heart-St. Casimir churches will be the weekend of Feb. 26 and 27.
There will be a community forum at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Immaculata High School auditorium. People who attend will have the opportunity to learn more about the new Xavier Elementary School and the fundraising progress. For more information, contact the LRCS Administration Office at 913-682-7801.
