Tryouts for the 2010 Leavenworth High School JROTC Raider Team will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Buffalo Bill Cody Park, Shrine Park Road and Limit Street.
Loosely based on the Army Rangers, the Raider Team practices physical and technical skills at both the individual and team levels. They perform tasks that may be found in a conventional Army unit such as a physical fitness test, five kilometer runs, a 10 kilometer road march, rope bridges, land navigation courses and first aid.
Conditioned to perform, the Leavenworth JROTC Raider Team is not only physically demanding in practice and competition. But even in tryouts, a Raider or soon-to-be Raider is pushed to perform as he or she seeks to make it through a standard Army PT test with a passing grade.
The Raider Team competes with schools in a four-state area and in National competitions. Raiders is considered a varsity sport.
