As the nature of combat operations for the U.S. military changes, so too does the training of its leaders.

The Advanced Military Studies Program on Fort Leavenworth recognized some of those changes during a graduation ceremony for students in its School of Advanced Military Studies on Thursday.

A total of 29 graduates received their Master of Military Arts and Sciences degree during the ceremony in Eisenhower Auditorium.

The event marked a first for the school — it was the first graduation of a second-start seminar since the expansion of the Army graduate-level studies program, according to Col. Stefan Banach, SAMS director.

In March 2008, the Training and Doctrine Command on the fort increased the number of seminars in the school and added a second start of two seminars in a January to December cycle, according to a release from the fort.

The release said the initiative is aimed at improving the “force generation” process.

The Army will need the help, Banach said, after the announcement on Tuesday that 30,000 additional troops will be sent to Afghanistan.
