Despite objections from people in the audience, members of the Leavenworth Board of Education approved a resolution Monday night to begin the process of not renewing an elementary principal’s contract.
The resolution to notify Janine Kempker of the board’s intent to not renew her contract for the 2010-2011 school year passed 4-2. Board members Donna Brown and Nancy Klemp voted against the measure. Board vice president Loyal Torkelson was absent.
Kempker is the principal of Nettie Hartnett Elementary School. She previously served as the principal of Anthony Elementary, but that school is closed this year as the building undergoes renovations.
No reason was given for the decision to not renew Kempker’s contract. But according to the resolution, Kempker can request a meeting with board members during which a reason or reasons would be offered.
“Shame on all of you,” Wayne Jackson said after the board’s vote.
