Children at Fort Leavenworth have raised more than $5,000 to build a school in Haiti.

But they came up a little short of a $6,000 goal needed to ensure both classrooms of the school are furnished.

However, organizer Elaine Belardo said the fundraising effort isn’t over.

Belardo, a parent who organized a change drive at Eisenhower Elementary, said officials at the other two elementary schools at Fort Leavenworth will be asked if they can help reach the goal by having their own fundraisers.

She said the money raised will go to a non-governmental organization, Lifeline Christian Mission, for the purpose of building the school.
