Karen Davis has been hired to be the new principal at Xavier Catholic School next year.

1 What made you want to apply for the position of principal at Xavier Catholic School?
I applied to be the principal of Xavier Catholic School because the idea of merging the three existing buildings into one building sounded like a great opportunity for me. Being able to bring all the teachers, parents and students together under one roof is going to allow me to share my gifts and talents with the Xavier school community. I can’t wait to get started!

2 How long have you been in education and where else have your worked?
I am completing my 20th year in education. I taught third grade for one year and middle school language arts in Oklahoma City public schools for four more years, then taught in Kansas City, Kan., public schools for five years before beginning my career in Catholic schools. I taught fourth grade at St. Agnes Catholic School, in Roeland Park, Kan., for one year then became the principal at St. Agnes for two years. I moved to Our Lady of Unity Catholic School in Kansas City, Kan., as the principal and have been there for the past seven years.

3 What philosophy has guided you during your career?
Believing all children are capable of learning and knowing it is my responsibility to figure out how best the students learn.

4 Xavier will be in a new building next year. What type of challenges will this present?
Our challenge will be making the new building feel like home to all our students, teachers and parents. Scheduling will be different than in the past — but I feel it will be easier with all the teachers in one place.

5 What would you like Xavier students and their parents to know about their new principal?
I was born and raised in Lenexa, Kan. My family belonged to Holy Trinity Parish in Lenexa. I have three brothers and two sisters. I currently am a member of Holy Cross Parish in Overland Park, Kans. My daughter will be a sophomore at Bishop Ward High School this August. I am very excited to meet the entire Xavier community.
