Leavenworth County authorities are trying to trace the origin of a counterfeit bill that turned up last week at a school in Linwood, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.
The bill was reported to the Sheriff’s Office Friday morning at Linwood Elementary School, 215 Park St.
Undersheriff Ron Cranor said a woman had used the bill to pay a fee at the school. Investigators don’t believe the woman knew the bill was counterfeit.
“We think she’s an innocent party,” Cranor said.
The bill turned up about a week after counterfeit money was passed at the Leavenworth County annex building in Tonganoxie. That investigation resulted in the arrest of two people.
Cranor said the U.S. Secret Service also has been involved in the earlier investigation.
The undersheriff said authorities don’t know if the counterfeit bill that turned up in Linwood is connected to the money that previously was passed in Tonganoxie.
