Two people were in custody Friday as a result of an investigation into counterfeit bills that were passed at the Leavenworth County annex building in Tonganoxie, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

Undersheriff Ron Cranor said 10 $100 bills were used to pay for two vehicle registrations Thursday at the County Treasurer’s Office at the annex. It was then determined the bills were counterfeit. A Tonganoxie woman was identified as a suspect.

The woman was one of the people in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office Friday.

“I don’t know where it’s all going to go,” Cranor said of the investigation.

He said authorities were serving a search warrant Friday afternoon at the Tonganoxie woman’s residence.

Cranor said the U.S. Secret Service, which works on counterfeit money cases, had not yet been notified.
