It may be taking longer than usual, but Leavenworth’s deputy police chief believes investigators will solve last month’s double homicide.

“We continue to work hard and I’m optimistic that we will get this solved,” Dan Nicodemus said.

He acknowledged that typically not as much time passes before an arrest is made as has passed since the Dec. 16 shooting of Derrick and Marshall Jones. But a double homicide is unusual for the city of Leavenworth.

Derrick and Marshall Jones were shot in a parking lot at Broadway and Metropolitan Avenue. The two brothers then left in a vehicle that crashed at Seventh and Spruce streets.

Derrick, 25, died at the crash scene. Marshall, 28, died at the hospital.

Nicodemus said police believe the brothers were trying to go to the hospital when the vehicle crashed in Union Park.

A third man reportedly had been in the vehicle with the Jones brothers, but he was said to be OK. Nicodemus said police have interviewed this man and other witnesses.

He said police have identified other witnesses but have not been able to speak with them.

The deputy chief said police are awaiting results from ballistics testing and autopsies. He said police may soon receive the ballistics results from a Kansas Bureau of Investigation laboratory.

Because of the seriousness of what happened, Leavenworth police officials asked that the ballistics testing for the case be made a priority.

Nicodemus said the ballistics results may help confirm what investigators have been told happened, or it could disprove information.

He said the autopsy results also can provide information important to the investigation.
