A car ended up on its roof Saturday night in north Leavenworth after it veered off the road and struck utility pole, a police spokesman said.
The overturned Ford Taurus was found by a patrol officer at 11:59 p.m. Saturday west of the intersection of Broadway and Shawnee Street.
The vehicle, which was off the roadway on the north side of Shawnee, was unoccupied. The car apparently had sheared a utility pole into two pieces, leaving the top part in the street, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
He said police contacted the vehicle’s owner, a 29-year-old Leavenworth woman, and asked her to return to the scene.
“The owner initially stated the vehicle was stolen,” Nicodemus said.
But after officers questioned her further, the woman reportedly admitted that she’d been driving the car.
The woman apparently had dropped her phone while driving. The vehicle veered off the road as she looked down to retrieve the phone, according to Nicodemus.
A friend gave the woman a ride to Cushing Hospital to be treated for minor injuries to her face.
The woman was ticketed by police for allegations of failing to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident involving damage to property, inattentive driving and having no proof of vehicle liability insurance.
