One person was taken to the hospital following a crash Sunday afternoon in southern Leavenworth County, according to a report from the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office witnessed the crash at about 12:55 p.m. Sunday at Kansas Highway 32 and Bowen Street.

A 38-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man was driving west on K-32 in a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am. He attempted to turn south onto Bowen Street. The man apparently thought he could make the turn in front of an eastbound vehicle without any problems.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle, a 2001 Toyota Sienna, attempted to avoid a collision by breaking and swerving. But the 58-year-old Lawrence woman was unable to stop in time, according to the report.

The Toyota struck the Pontiac. The Toyota then went into a ditch and struck a stop sign and a light pole, breaking both. The Pontiac spun around and came to rest in the ditch next to the Toyota.

The 58-year-old woman was transported by Leavenworth County EMS to Lawrence Memorial Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, according to the report.

The 38-year-old man was cited by officers for an allegation that he failed to yield to oncoming traffic.

Both vehicles involved in the crash are considered total losses.
