A man allegedly shot a dog Saturday in Leavenworth in order to break up a fight between several of his animals, a police spokesman said.

The dog that was wounded later was euthanized. No arrest was made, but the case will be sent to the appropriate prosecutor for review. The weapon that was used had been reported stolen, police Lt. Kevin Crim said.

The incident was reported shortly after noon Saturday in the 2500 block of Third Avenue. Crim said officers initially were sent to the area because of a report of shots fired.

It was determined that three dogs had attacked another dog. The dogs, which belong to the man who reportedly fired the shot, were outside of a residence.

“They were able to get one of them to break away,” Crim said.

The other dogs continued to fight, so the man allegedly shot one of them.
Crim said it appears the other dogs were OK. They were removed from the residence by Leavenworth Animal Control.

The firearm was collected by police.
