Fire Department officials were calling a fire that engulfed a car Thursday morning in Leavenworth suspicious.

The fire was reported at 2:23 a.m. Thursday in the 20 block of Pottawatomie Street. The estimated loss was $2,000, according to Leavenworth Assistant Fire Chief Mike Lingenfelser.

Lt. Nicodemus of the Leavenworth Police Department said the car was fully engulfed when a responding officer arrived. The burning vehicle was parked under a carport just off of an alley.

“The officer got everybody out of the residence as a precautionary measure,” Nicodemus said.

He said six people were at the residence at the time. No injuries were reported.

Lingenfelser said the car was a Mazda. The fire caused only minimal damage to the carport.

He said the fire was still under investigation.
