Firefighters spent about 2.5 hours last week working at an ice-covered lake at Lansing’s Lost 80 Park.
Members of Fire District No. 1 of Leavenworth County were training for ice rescues.
Firefighters dressed in protective suits as they worked Saturday on ice and in icy water, according to Fire Chief Rick Huhn.
Huhn said the lake was covered with a layer of ice about three inches thick.
To set up a rescue scenario, a firefighter would go into the cold water through a hole that had been cut into the ice with a chain saw. Huhn said the water was about 34 degrees Fahrenheit.
Firefighters practiced the three steps they would use in such rescue situations.
