An inmate remains in the hospital after he was hit with a baseball bat over the weekend at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, according to a Fort Leavenworth spokeswoman.

The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. Saturday in a secured recreation field at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth. Several inmates were playing sports.

One inmate allegedly struck another with the bat before he was quickly detained by corrections officers, according to fort spokeswoman Rebecca Steed.

The injured inmate was evacuated by helicopter to a hospital. His last known condition was critical, according to Steed.

The alleged assailant has been secured away from other prisoners, pending further investigation.

The USDB is the only maximum-security facility within the Department of Defense. It also houses minimum- and medium-security inmates from all branches of U.S. military service.

The security status of the inmates involved in Saturday’s incident has not been released.
