The city of Leavenworth will once again institute its Urban Deer Management Program this fall and is currently seeking interested property owners and bow hunters to participate in the controlled bow-hunting program, which begins on Sept. 20.
The intent of this program, which started in 2004, is to decrease property damage and vehicular accidents involving deer by allowing bow hunting on private property that has been pre-screened for safety and appropriate size.
During the 2009-2010 season, 65 deer were harvested through the city’s program. The city’s Deer Management Committee is striving to maintain the same numbers for this year.
Hunters who are interested in participating in this program are required to provide both a Kansas Deer Hunting License and a Kansas Deer Tag, which are issued by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Hunters must also attend one of two certification sessions beginning at 8 a.m. on either Aug. 21 or Sept. 11 at Fire Station No. 1 on 20th Street Trafficway.
The certification process will include a written proficiency test based on the current bow-hunting ordinance and a bow-hunting accuracy test. Field tips are needed for the testing. The prospective hunter must be at least 18 years of age and must sign legal releases that hold the city and the property owner harmless in the case of an accident. Only hunters with knowledge of hunting and proven skills should apply.
In order to supplement the 13-acre snake habitat off of 20th Street Trafficway and other eligible city-owned property, property owners who are willing to allow hunting on their property are encouraged to apply. Property owners who have parcels of land less than three acres can request a waiver to allow hunting on their property, however, no hunting is allowed within 500 feet of the property boundary of an active school building.
If interested in participating as either a hunter in this program or to have one’s property included, please contact Lt. Sean Goecke at 680-2512 and download the program information packet off the city’s Web site at http://www.lvks.org/egov/docs/1218223096625.htm. The information packet includes a copy of the ordinance, a blank deer-hunting permit and copies of the owner and city release forms.
