Leavenworth County authorities are investigating a case of animal cruelty after a horse was found dead over the weekend, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.

The incident was reported at 10:57 a.m. Sunday in the area of Amnesty and DeSoto roads.

The male horse reportedly had two puncture wounds on its left side. A deputy also saw a large amount of blood inside a fence line on the property, according to the report.

The horse’s owner, Amber Keller, said a man who owns property to the south of the horse enclosure had been in the area that morning.

The deputy reportedly met with the man, who said he had been milking goats that morning with his uncle at 8 a.m. on his property. He said horses on Keller’s property were fine, according to the report.

The witness went back to that location a couple of hours later and saw a horse lying down. The witness reported seeing a man with the horse. The witness did not know the man’s name or where he lives, according to the report.

The investigation was said to be ongoing.
