The greatest thanks Americans can give to veterans is an appreciation of the freedoms they enjoy because of the work of the armed forces.

That was a message expressed by Col. William M. Raymond Jr. during a program honoring veterans Tuesday at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth.

Raymond is the director of the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth. He said veterans are owed a great debt of gratitude.

“We look to you for inspiration,” he said.

Tuesday’s Veterans Day observance at the USP was held the day before the national holiday.

Raymond said Veterans Day honors people who served, fought and “sacrificed so much.” He said Veterans Day also honors people who served during peace time but still risked their lives.
